Where to start

Your GP would be the best person to seek advice from initially to ascertain what type of care is required. Let’s imagine that you have already looked at all the options and have decided that a care home would be the best option for your situation. The two main types of care home are residential care homes and nursing homes, the latter supplying 24/7 nursing care.

How to find a care home:

  • ask friends and relatives for their recommendations
  • talk to your GP
  • your Local Authority and Social Services will be able to provide further information on services in your area. Search for your Local Authority

  • the Elderly Accommodation Counsel (0207 820 1343) for lists of homes in most areas
  • the Registered Nursing Home Association (0121 454 2511) for a list of registered nursing homes
  • check web sites like Care & Support Guide
