Tamarisk Trust Ltd. was originally inaugurated as a charity and company in 1958. Founded by Mrs Betty Jones MBE, the primary aims were to provide accommodation and education for children with learning disabilities. The first house was set up in 1962 for 8 children, 4 girls and 4 boys, between the ages of 5 and 12 years. The concept grew to require further homes and other houses in and around the Barnet area were purchased, until by the late 70's a total of 60 residents both children and adults, were accommodated.

In 1984 the introduction of the Registered Homes Act (now the Care Standards Act) and the accompanying Home Life report made it clear, amongst other things, that single occupancy bedrooms were more desirable. In order to be able to offer this type of accommodation, Tamarisk Trust gradually decreased the number of service user's to its present forty-four.

In 1991 a day service was formed to offer individuals opportunities and choices that were community based and more flexible. The Tamarisk Opportunities Network continues to grow whilst remaining focused on individuals needs. It offers the chance to gain employment, access sport and leisure, life skills and education within a supported environment.

The organisation was first recognised as Investors in People in 1998 and continues to maintain their high standard. Through the organization's commitment to Investors in People, Tamarisk Trust has effective and efficient ongoing training and development packages for all staff. Monthly supervision and personal reviews are measured against the Investor in People standards.

Tamarisk Trust has developed its policies and procedures in line with external standards and guidelines. The organization's strategic objectives are an amalgamation of each service unit's business plan. These are considered essential to ensure sufficient resources will be available to fulfill service users' needs and wishes.

The Tamarisk Trust is well-known locally and highly thought of within the community. The organisation has successfully worked in partnership on both long and short term projects including piloting a hospital book for a health promotion project, the development of a workforce training and development plan for the local Partnership Board and working with Connexions in supporting young adults who are due to leave school to establish their options for the future. Tamarisk Trust has also worked with other not-for-profit organizations and a local authority day centre on a car washing project and a café project. - Send Email
