South Gloucestershire Crossroads is a registered charity offering a respite/support service to carers living within the geographic area of South Gloucestershire. Carers are relatives, friends or neighbours who have the responsibility of looking after someone who has a disability and who could not manage at home without the support provided by their carer. The overall aim of the service provided by South Gloucestershire Crossroads is to provide carers with such responsibilities with a much-needed short break from these responsibilities. The actual service provided is negotiated by the agency with each individual carer and a care plan is agreed, which is tailored to meet the needs of both the carers and the person they are caring for. The service provided can therefore include some personal care tasks and for this reason is regulated by CSCI.

This agency’s services are designed to complement any existing support services people may have and can help avoid admission into hospital or residential care. The agency receives joint funding from social services and the Primary Care Team (PCT) for up to 250 hours per week, 40 hours per week of which are aimed at supporting/offering respite to carers who are caring for someone who is terminally ill. In addition, and due to a high demand for this agency’s services, individual carers can, and do, seek to purchase respite/support hours privately or hours can be spot contracted on their behalf by social services or the PCT.

Although operating completely autonomously, South Gloucestershire Crossroads is a branch member of the Association of Crossroads Schemes. The agency therefore operates within a national framework of policies and procedures, and has a national quality assurance system in operation.
